This project is an attempt to emulate the worldbuilding of older Warcraft lore. It builds upon the RTS games of yesteryear, the TTRPG books from White Wolf Publishing, and the early days of World of Warcraft. While the lore itself is primarily the work of Blizzard, the functional parts are based on Kevin Crawford's Worlds Without Number. This particular game is based upon older editions of Dungeons & Dragons.
This is entirely non-commercial. There are no ads, no links to products, and no affiliate links for referral bonuses. It is essentially a financial drain by way of webhosting.
It's just my own fan project. The eventual tabletop rules are for my own players, not for publishing or some sort of misplaced fame.
Regarding the Name
Azeroth is not owned by Blizzard as either a trademark or a copyright. Blizzard owns Battle for Azeroth specifically. Formerly they also owned the Heroes of Azeroth trademark in relation to trading cards, but this has lapsed.
A suspicious Chinese company using a Gmail address owns the Azeroth trademark since 2022 in relation to pet feeders, but has not yet released any products with that name seemingly.
Technology Nonsense
I have made this probably far too complicated behind the scenes.
- ParserFunctions to make variables in a lot of templates.
- Cargo for storing and querying data.
- Page Forms for adding, editing, and querying data using forms.
Outside MediaWiki extensions, I have also used ChatGPT to generate images for my own characters and for the site wordmark. I don't have Photoshop skills and wouldn't have hired an "artist" anyway, so this works out well for me. When there is official art for something, I obviously use that.
I have additionally used ChatGPT to help me find book/game sources for references, especially for first usage. It's amazing how many citations on Warcraft Wiki have been partially disproven or shown to be assumptions.
