An Ancient is an Eternal who is treated as a god to the night elves, furbolgs, and quilboar. Each is a primal spirit of the natural world, existing since the world was young.[1] Ancients rarely interfere with life, but their worshippers hold fast to their beliefs that the Ancients are watching events unfold.[2]

Trivia
- The various Warcraft wikis over the years have falsely referred to the Ancients as "Ancient Guardians". This is in reference to a generic description in the Warcraft III manual[3] that has been misconstrued. Worse yet, in subsequent years these beings have been separated from the tree entities also called ancients, but that original quote from the manual was specifically in regards to these trees. The entire situation is a mess by people who cannot read.
- In later lore, the term "Eternal" is entirely forgotten and replaced by "Wild God". This has become a catch-all term for anything vaguely nature-related, lumping all Ancients and Loa into a single group. More complicated, however, is the fact that trolls later refer to everything of a spiritual/nature power, such as wisps, as Loa, thus effectively making them Wild Gods. No one refers to wisps as Wild Gods, so this is entirely wrong without being able to point to any lore justification.
