Darnassian is the language of night elves.[1] It is named after the ancient city of Darnassus, a long destroyed centre of learning from the days before Queen Azshara.[2]

Due to the immortality of the night elves until recently, the language has been remarkably unchanging for 10,000 years. Its daughter languages, Thalassian and Nazja, share much of its vocabulary and phrases, but the former has diverged a bit and the latter remains largely a mystery to all living on the land. Ideological differences between the night elves and the high elves make linguistic work difficult, especially when the night elves find any comparisons offensive.[3]
